Inclusion of women has grown mostly consistently since the dawn of the 20th century, and has grown more sharply since the late 1980s. Similar patterns are seen in racial diversification. One cant deny the positive nature of this kind of progress, however, this is progress at an incredibly slow and simply inadequate rate. It took a full century for women and racial minorities to reach the sad level of under-representation we suffer today. As a nation, we must do better. We must do better because there is so much at stake in who composes our government, like how their race, gender, and class positionality frames their values, world views, and assumptions about what is right and just. How can we seriously address gender discrimination and the chipping away of womens reproductive freedom when those who experience these problems are a minority in Congress? How can we effectively address problems of racism like over-policing, police brutality, over-incarceration, and racist hiring practices when people of color are not adequately represented in Congress?  We cannot expect white men to fix these problems for us because they do not experience them, and see and live their detrimental effects the way that we do.   Lets throw economic class into the mix too. Members of Congress receive an annual salary of $174,000, which puts them in the top bracket of income earners, and far above the median household income of $51,000. The New York Times reported in January 2014 that the median wealth of members of Congress was just over $1 million.  Meanwhile, the median wealth of US households in 2013 was just $81,400 according to Pew Research Center, and half of the US population is in or near poverty. A 2014 Princeton study which analyzed policy initiatives from 1981 to 2002 concluded that the US is no longer a democracy, but is an oligarchy: ruled by a small group of elites. The study conclusively found that most policy initiatives are driven and directed by a select few wealthy individuals who are socially connected to our political representatives. The authors wrote in their report, The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence. Is it any wonder that our government has systematically eroded funding for public education, services, and welfare? That Congress will not pass legislation to ensure a living wage for all people? Or, that instead of creating jobs that pay living wages, we have seen a rise in contract, part-time labor devoid of benefits and rights?  This is what happens when the rich and privileged rule at the expense of the majority. This shows that they must be similar, we could have used a better solvent than hexane to show reliable results. Conclusion The TLC successfully exhibited the different affinities of the analgesics. The Rf values were successfully obtained and due to the different affinities, the unknown standard was identified. However, the identity of the unknown standard was not eas ily attainable, there were complications with the experiment. The complications that could have hindered the results, include human error in measuring and observing. Also, the tools used in this experiment may not have been sterile and the stock solutions may not have been pure solutions. For the column chromatography experiment, the isolated ? -carotene obtained was isolated from the solution, again human error in measuring and observing could have hindered these results. For isolating ? -carotene, the solvent used was hexane but that did not move the components so a better solvent could have been used to show more reliable results and to make the components move from the baseline. After removing the TLC paper from the solvent, it would dry off very quickly so this could have caused errors in marking the solvent front, this is a human error and can be improved by reducing human error and improving accuracy with doing measurements. The media dictates what is considered fashionable, the popular hair styles or trends. Images of thin, leggy models in short skirts, shorts and tiny swimsuits having fun, flirting and getting attention from men visually show what is considered to be beautiful. If a girl does not fit into the mold, she may begin to have self-doubt, or body satisfaction issues. â€Å"Idealized images are an influential source of pressure to meet the thin idea† (Monro and Huon 89). Society is obsessed with perfection. It is evident in the number of women choosing to undergo cosmetic surgery in the attempt to attain the perfect body, nose, figure and smile. â€Å"We found that girls who engage in more appearance-related discussions and imitation of others had lower appearance satisfaction† (Dohnt and Tiggean 9). â€Å"We found that girls who watched television shows with an appearance emphasis, such as Friends or Rage, we less satisfied with their appearance. Instead of conforming to the standards of her co-workers, Betty maintains her integrity and shows that being a kind, smart, and caring person is what makes you truly beautiful. As time passes, people begin to see that Betty’s beauty does not lie in her physical appearance but in her spirit and compassion. If images like this continue, more girls will begin to see that their own inner strength, self-assuredness, and integrity are more beautiful than the images that you see splashed across any fashion magazine or TV show. These are real qualities that any girl can obtain. Society is always going to have its own opinion of what beauty is. And this will always be perpetuated through media.
